After yesterdays race at the Lake Meridian Triathlon I felt forced to reflect on this year so far. While I was hoping to perform better then I did on the same course in June, that didn’t happen (full race review to come.) And you know what? That’s ok. I began to think about my training so far this year, and I realized, I haven’t been training. Have I been working out consistently? Yes. Have I regained strength from my pregnancy? Yes. But have I been actually training? No? You may be thinking to yourself, “Amber if you workout everyday how is that not training?” one word, purpose. My workouts have had the purpose of improving my strength and stamina, yes. But they have not had the specific purpose needed to propel me forward towards my goals.
I am ok with my performance on this past weekends race because I realized my priorities have been on other things, and it shows. While I may not have done as well as I would have liked on this race I have accomplished some pretty amazing things in other areas of my life. I am going to take a moment to reflect on that. I finished my associates degree and maintained my straight A’s since returning to college. I was accepted to Bastyr University for the Nutrition and Exercises Science program and will be attending in the fall. I passed my NSCA Certified Personal Trainer Exam and began teaching early morning bootcamp classes. And while I may not have had my best day out on the race course yesterday, I did have my first personally coached athlete finish her very first triathlon, and that feels pretty darn good.
With the next month off school, and my sights set on Black Diamond Triathlon, The Snohomish River Run Half marathon and a handful of other running races to finish out 2015 I have decided today is the day to sit down, write out a training plan, and put purpose back into my workouts!
