With My Better Half Marathon completed the first half marathon of 2016 is in the books! Now I have to be real with you, this race didn’t exactly go as planned, from waking up sick, to miss understanding the loop course, all I can do is chock it up to fate and get excited for an amazing 2016, because even with the mishaps I had a great day, let’s get into it.
Pre Race Details
There was great communication leading up to the race, including an email with all of the important race day information. Packet pick was the day before as well as day of. While I opted for day of pick up, getting around Seattle with the babies is a challenge, packet pick up was at at Road Runner Sports in Greenlake which would have been convenient for picking up any last minute race day needs.
A for the race it’s self the location couldn’t be better. Seward Park (the same location as Seafiar Triathlon) has great parking in and around the park, not to mention a beautiful setting with tall pines and a stunning lake side view.Ready to run My Better Half Marathon? Race Day Morning
The morning of I was a little nervous going into this race. Not about the run, I woke up that Sunday morning feeling pretty lousy. I was stoked for this race though, and I wasn’t gong to miss it. I made some nice soothing ginger tea for my tummy and rubbed Thieves and coconut oil on under my Compression Socks. Lucky for me it seemed to do the trick. By the time the race started my stomach was settled and I was actually feeling pretty good.
While it was gray and dreary it was actually perfect racing weather. Once you got moving the temperature was perfect, and the light mist actually felt nice. Between the tall pines, the gray water, the soft rain and some MIA beats on my head phones the run felt tribal which was epic and inspiring. The My Better Half Marathon is a multi loop course, I wasn’t sure how I felt about that until we really got into it. It turns out the loops where big enough to keep you from feeling like a hamster in a cage, and the bonuses far out weighed any draw backs. You stay inside the park for the entire run gorgeous and completely safe from cars. This design allowed for one very well stocked aid station that didn’t run out of supplies during the run. The thing I ended up liking the most about the course was knowing where I was in the race and trying to pace myself accordingly. An added bonus for slower runners and walkers is that you were never alone out there. I personally found it inspiring seeing the woman who I am sure won the race run past, #goals!
As much fun as I had, the race did not go as I had hoped. Only 2 miles in I felt the insole of my left shoe crumple beneath my foot. I love my Brooks Pure Flow Running Shoes but I think I have beat them nearly to death, time for a replacement. I stopped to fix the insole, that early in the race I was worried leaving it would cause blisters. The insole crumpled up under my foot two more times before I finally pulled it out and shoved it in my pocket with my Garmin (the strap broke months ago and is also in need of replacement!)
Unfortunately my race day mishaps didn’t end there. I had issues with some serious chaffing from my Skirt Sports Gym Girl Skirt. I know better than to wear something new on race day and this skirt was no exception. I wore it on several training runs with no issues, and I absolutely love the brand. I wore my Skirt Sport Vixen Skirt for the BMO Half Marathon with no issues at all so I know this brand can go the distance. Why I had issues with chaffing on such a cool day I am not sure, but it really wasn’t terrible until after the race.
It turns out the biggest issue I had that day was still to come! As I mentioned it was a loop course, and here is where I got myself into trouble. It was a total of 5 loops, the first loop included a nice little hill, the subsequent four where flat. I counted that first out and back loop on the hill has loop one and the flat loops as loop 2-5 finishing strong and stopping my watch once I crossed the finish line. I was feeling pretty good despite the mishaps. It wasn’t until I was in the nice warm post race party tent enjoying a bowl of lentil soup that I pulled my watch out to check my time. I was surprised and frustrated to read 10.69 miles on the watch face. I took a minute to think through my loops realizing I must have missed one. But as I thought through them I couldn’t figure it out, until it dawned on me, that out and back on the hill was not a stand alone loop, it was an addition to a larger flat loop. Whomp whomp, I had missed about two and a half miles on the course. While I was disappointed that I hadn’t finished the total 13.1 miles, with all of the mishaps that morning I had to chock it up to fate and accept that was as far as I was going that day.
On a positive note I was really pleased with how I did on this early season race and can’t wait to see how the rest of the season turns out, I see some PR’sin 2016!
Let’s talk post race festivities! As post race food goes Orca Running seems to have this one down. Not only where there plenty of vendors handing our samples, thank you very much Vita Coco, but there was a big tent set up where runners could hang out, grab some lentil soup from Mama Passarelli Catering along with some chips from Food Should Taste Good, Munk Pack squeeze and more. If you have read my other race reviews you know that post race food maters to me, I just worked my butt off, I would like some good grub! I would also like to mention, with a February race in the Pacific Northwest I am glad that Orca Running thought a head and made sure there was a warm dry place for runners to hang out.
Have I mentioned the swag yet? Instead of a plan race t-shirt My Better Half Marathon opted for a long sleeve technical running shirt which looks great! It is great for training runs, and one of the few race shirts I actually wear. You also get an awesome finisher medal which has an interlocking magnetic mate so if you run the race with your partner, or bestie you can have matching race medals that mesh together, pretty awesome! As if that wasn’t enough you also get free downloads of your race photos which I love!
While I was disappointing that I missed some mileage over all it was a great day!Ready to sign up for an Orca Running event? Check out this race recap with discount codes #halfmarathon #seattle Click To Tweet
